| Derby/Sheffield | Ride Derby to Melbourne Starting from Derby - Pride Park tbc at 1000 . Easy . This route now planned -- all we need to sort out now is the weather. Meet for 1000 start at Derby Arena Car Park (behind the Arena - £3 all day or easily accessed from NCN 6 if riding there). Route will be a gentle run out on the cycle path along the old Derby Canal, then short sections alongside the Trent & Mersey and the River Trent before back roads to Ticknall and then a ride through the grounds of Calke Abbey. Thence via Breedon and the Cloud Trail before a stop after 19 miles at Melbourne Hall Tea Rooms (or Brew House). Then back to base via the Cloud Trail, Elvaston Castle and NCN 6 alongside the River Derwent. There are a few small hills as we cross the South Derbyshire countryside but overall it is a pretty gentle run of just over 30 miles. All welcome. | Lancashire & Cumbria | A ferry ride in south Cumbria Starting from Kendal College Car Park LA9 5AY at 09:15 for 09:30. 40 miles, Hard . Meet at Kendal College Car Park LA9 5AY 9:15 for a 9:30 start. On street parking is available adjavcent to the college on Vicarage Drive. We will cycle through the town centre and take the road to Burneside then the back road to Staveley and Ings for a coffee stop at the Lakeland Farm (9 miles). Then it is up and across the gated lane to the B5284, past the golf course and down to Ferry Nab for the ferry across the lake. Then we have a bit of a climb before heading south to Lakeside for our lunch stop after 21 miles. We leave Lakeside along the new cycle path by the River Leven to Newby Bridge before crossing the A590, taking Hazelrigg Lane and Palace Lane to Seatle and then up to High Newton. We have a steep descent into the Winster Valley to Town End before a flat stretch to Gilpin Bridge for a potential tea break (32 miles). Then it is back to Kendal via Levens and Sizergh. There are obvious ways to shorten or lengthen that as required.
My planner says 500m of ascent and descent, most of that clustered around 4 locations on the route, two before the coffee stop and then one before and after lunch. The majority of the distance is reasonably easy going.
