The BCQ Challenge

What is the British Cycle Quest?

“The British Cycle Quest is a set of 402 checkpoints across Great Britain, reaching as far north as the Shetland Isles, and as far south as Cornwall. All you have to do is look on the BCQ map to see where they are, get there by bicycle, and answer a straightforward question - which you’ll then submit via the BCQ website. You don’t have to cycle to them all from home – that would be crazy! You can use car assist, train assist, ferry assist … whatever’s necessary to get you and your bike to a place near enough to cycle from. If you decide to take it on, you can plan your UK holidays around the BCQs, or simply see what’s in an area when you’re there and do those. And there’s no time limit. Most people take multiple years, if not decades, to complete! You have the option to be added to a leader board, so you can see how you’re doing. And prizes I hear you ask? Well, the main reward for completing the challenge is the fun you’ll have had doing it, and having gone to places that you may never have been to otherwise. But you do get an engraved medal when you’ve done all 402, plus certificates and optional interim medals once you’ve completed, 100, 200 and 300 checkpoints. Take a look at the BCQ challenge on the Cycling UK website, and see where it may take you.”

It’s a brilliant way to motivate yourself to get out on your bike and go exploring, so why not start planning your routes? Take a look at the map to find a checkpoint near you.

What are the rules?

To prove you’ve visited a checkpoint, all you need to do is answer a question about it. We tell you where the checkpoint is – you choose your own route to get to it. It’s that easy.

You can submit your answers using our online form. You can submit the answers at convenient points in your BCQ journey; we suggest batches of 10 answers at a time.

You can do BCQ with someone else; please let us know if you are and if you want to share a medal!

You are expected to arrive at each location on your choice of cycle, but there are no rules against driving or taking the train to the general area. We hope you have some great times discovering BCQ checkpoints and finding places you might otherwise never have visited.
