Stepover height?

Chris Peachey2026-01-13 16:31:55

What is the Pilot's stepover height on your Orbits/Helios/Gepida/Moustache tandems Please? (measured at the lowest point on the cross bar)

We are looking for a new eTandem with mid-drive motor.

Hi The measurement on our Moustache is 79cms

Directly below saddle tip Gepida stepover is 77cm, mid steersmans toptube is 85cm, both with the stock Suntour sus fork and 47mm tyres

I have fitted ours with a JD rigid fork so I can fit a bigger than 180mm rotor on the front after the stock one proved inadequate (down a 1 in 4 to be fair), so with that fitted the two dims are 74cm and 81cm.

We have an e-helios. The lowest (rearmost) height of the Pilots crossbar is 63cm. At the likely step over point just forward of the saddle tip it is 67cm. We like the bike and it has proved a very competent and comfortable tourer.

It's going to depend on which size tandem you are thinking of buying.

The step over height on the moustache drops by a few cm when the captain sits on the top tube (while bike dips a bit due to suspension front forks). This is a request from my wife when she dismounts! As well as step over height - think about stoker compartment length - on the moustache it's big and my wife thinks this is a huge plus to not feel so cramped.

We have a moustache tandem, you can come and try it if you like. We are in West London, postcode W13

We have an Ecosmo we bought 2nd hand when I was having difficultly mounting our old full size Viking. Front 62cm, back 58cm.

A much more basic tandem than those you mention, excellent for our limited needs, but probably not that relevant to you.

One point that might be, related to Tony's post above: we tried a Helios and my wife didn't like the fairly cramped stoker space. The Ecosmo is much better for that.

Thanks for all the info and offers of a test ride.

We have a better idea of what we need now and will probably make a trip to JD Tandems for a test ride when the weather gets a bit warmer.
