Strange noise advice needed!

Fettling a secondhand Trek tandem with Cytronrex assist, we have a strange new rather 'graunchy' noise since fitting a new chain. It seems to come from the stoker's bottom bracket area with each pedal stroke (not using the assist). It happens only in the middle ring under pressure, when either of us is pedalling, in all gear positions. Any ideas please?

Changing back to the old chain has led us to think that the middle ring needs to be replaced, as all seems okay in the big and little rings. Let's hope it's that simple!
