S&S couplers

I have a raven discovery with the S&S couplers and would like some advice on how to transport it when uncoupled. For those who have S&S couplers in other tandems and don't know where they are on the raven discovery, there is one set in front of the captain seat tube. It would most likely be transported on the train. The first thing that strikes me is when uncoupled what is the best way for it to be positioned. If I am going away for a week or so, and will be staying at one place would it be worth trying to remove as many components as possible to shorten both sections (wheels, mudguards, etc) and trying to pack it into some case or bag (I think not so good as the rear section is still going to be quite a size even so), and would that make it more likely to be carried by some of the more awkward train companies? Also there is the bit of protected them when uncoupled, from knocks and dirt. Are the tennis ball idea mentioned in the manual any good? I have come across someone who said they put some inner tube over the couplers. Will they need re-greasing after having some of these protective covers removed? I don't want to waste that specific grease at the price it is!
I think that is enough questions, and some of them might be best answered by Thorn, particularly as I have to contact them about some other questions anyway.
