Replacement gears for Dawes Super Galaxy

I have a Dawes tandem - at least 20 years old at a guess. The gears are becoming increasingly problematic. Although everything seems fine when on a stand, when there is any sort of pressure excerted it becomes very difficult to change gears, and normally evrything ends in tears. It would seem that everything is becoming worn out.
The derailleurs are Suntour which I believe is now defunct. I have been told informally that I would need to make wholesale replacements to improve the situation - derailleurs, gear leavers, new wheel hub with cassette. Even this might not work as the frame might need stretching?
Has anybody done this sort of overhaul? I am wondering what the cost is likely to be and whether I would be throwing money away given the age of the bike.
Any suggestions would be welcome.
