Cranks for Brompton adult + child tandem

I'm thinking about converting my Brompton +ITchair to an Adult + Child tandem like this;

Left hand crank pedal threads are opposite to 'normal' so that the pedals don't unscrew in use. How important is this? and would a threadlock overcome any likelihood of pedal coming undone in use. I'd also like to know if it isn't practical with an adult pedaling would it be likely to hold for a 5 year old pedaling.
I want to know if I can use cheaper stuff or need specialist tandem stuff.
My first thoughts are to use the SJS kiddiecrank thing with their smaller 110mm kids chainset and source a suitable LH tandem crank for me, but if I can get away with a standard Brompton RH crank used on the left it'll be cheaper.
