Brakes on 1992 Dawes

I have a 1992 Dawes Super Galaxy which has spent most of its life stored in my loft. With my eldest daughter now tall enough to ride it, I have returned it to the road and am pleased to say it has survived in very good condition and works perfectly.
I have a question about the safety of its braking system. It uses a single lever (right hand) to operate both front and rear cantilever brakes, with the left hand operating the rear drum. The right hand lever is clearly designed for this purpose, having separate holes for siting two cables - it's not a case of shoehorning two cables into one hole.
Is this a recommended braking setup, or will I be sent home from my first Tandem Club event as a danger to anyone who approaches within 100 yards?
