SouthWest Trains - Portsmouth to London

Despite being taken (with tandem) from London Waterloo to Portsmouth by SWT on July 8th, the guard refused to bring us back on the last direct train to London last night after our arrival from France by ferry. This was despite the train (22:24) being nearly empty, and the tandem fitting perfectly in the empty 'three bike' space in the carriage.
Fortunately we were able to travel on the SWT 23:24 to Guildford (sensible guard? preemptive intervention of kind and pragmatic station staff?).
It was the same train design, so we have pictures of the fit to send to SWT.
As per the helpful information provided by the platform staff in Portsmouth we then travelled on a nearly empty FGW train (no bike racks) to Reading, and then another nearly empty FGW train (again no bike racks) on to Paddington for 3:20a.m. arrival. Three hours after we should have been in Waterloo!
