Tandem hire in the New Forest - our experience

As tandem novices (but experienced cyclists), my wife and I decided to hire a tandem for a couple of day trips before buying. Both days ended up being in the New Forest, which was a good place to go to learn, given the large number of very rideable car-free off-road tracks, flat terrain and presence of many other tandems.
We used the directory on this site to find places to hire from. The first time we used Country Lanes at Brockenhurst. They gave us a Trek T900, which was well maintained and pleasant to ride. The person gave us some guidance and was helpful. I'd recommend them.
The second time we hired from Sandy Balls Cycle Centre at Godshill. They had the same model of tandem (unfortunately - would have been nice to try something different). It was rideable but in much poorer condition. The pedals were out of phase so I had to adjust the timing chain before starting, it had significant rusting of chrome parts consistent with being left out in the rain, and the stokers seat post seemed to be too small for the seat tube. Also they had long queues to collect the bike (c 30 min wait), some petty/annoying rules and didn't appear to know much about tandems. Not recommended!
