Tandem on ferries

We usually take our tandem to France with a car under it. However this year we thought we might go without the car.
I am interested whether I need to warn the ferry company that our bike is a tandem, or whether I just book it as a standard bike.
Also, do ferry companies charge extra for bike trailers? We don't posess a trailer, so probably won't take one, but my quandry is similar to that of single vs tandem booking - it's a bit unusual, so ferry company may be difficult, but tandem a nd trailer will still stow out of the way, not really occupying otherwise usefull space, so will they really care?
